The RNC Sports Academy provides support to aspiring athletes in a professional training environment with world class accessible facilities and the highest standard of coaching.
Here’s what our students have to say…
“It wasn’t my aim to start blind football when I first came to RNC but blind football has given me the confidence back from being sighted and also given me the chance to represent my country.” Brandon Coleman, former RNC Sports Academy student, current England Blind Footballer.
Duration of programme
The Sports Academy is accessible to every RNC student, Sports Academy sessions are flexible to fit in alongside your individualised academic/vocational timetable.
Students can receive between 1 and 10 hours of Sports Academy sessions per week, depending on the individual student.
There are no formal entry requirements but previous playing experience is preferable but depends on the individual, the chosen sport and the chosen level. This can be discussed at your Pre-Entry Assessment.
Enthusiasm and willingness to learn are essential for anyone wanting to join the RNC Sports Academy.
There are recreational opportunities to play, both internally at RNC and at weekend tournaments for novice players who may not have played sport before.
The main sports we offer are Goalball, Football, Judo and Golf, however we also deliver a range of other sports including Cricket, Boccia and many more, depending on individual requirements.
For full RNC Sports Academy members, we tailor sports specific programmes and will encourage you to train as close to a professional athlete as possible. As well as practicing your chosen sport, your timetable will include strength and conditioning plus sessions on nutrition, lifestyle, injury and rehabilitation management.
As an RNC Sports Academy student, you will have regular fitness testing to monitor your progress and ensure you are working at the right level. Our coaches will work with you to set personalised goals and objectives to ensure that you reach your potential.
“Our aim is to be able to accommodate any VI (visually impaired) sport/athlete and we will do our best to accommodate their needs.” Aaron Ford, RNC Sports Academy Coach and GB Women’s Goalball Coach.
At the RNC Sports Academy we have had students undertaking different disciplines including gymnastics, skiing, athletics, swimming and climbing. In these cases our sports coaches will provide as much support for improving aspects of fitness on site, and we link students up with local sports clubs in order for them to access their specific sport.
Sessions are taught as a mix of individual and group sessions. We adopt different teaching styles to meet your needs, with specialist coaches who have considerable experience working with athletes who have visual impairment.
The RNC Sports Academy works alongside a number of key partners in disability sport including The FA (Football Association), Goalball UK, British Judo Association, England Golf and BBS (British Blind Sport). These links have been instrumental in the success of the RNC Sports Academy, allowing unique access for our students to train alongside other elite athletes, working closely with national team coaches.
At the RNC Sports Academy, we have a range of Sport England’s TASS (Talented Athletes Scholarship Scheme) students and are proud to have achieved TDS (TASS delivery site) status.
Course Enrichment Opportunities
Regular tournaments in national and domestic leagues, including Goalball (novice, intermediate and elite), Football (blind and partially sighted league) and Cricket (South West league).
The RNC Sports Academy has links to national programmes and we provide opportunities for you to attend talent identification days for a range of sports.
In addition to increased fitness and excellence in sport, our students gain increased confidence, mobility and spatial awareness, social and communication skills, leadership, team work and self-discipline.
Successful students from the RNC Sports Academy have gone on to play for national teams in their chosen sport.
Many students also choose to maintain their fitness by playing sport recreationally in their home area when they leave RNC.
