RNC: Specialist College of the Year!
There have been celebrations all round campus as RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) was named Specialist College of the Year at The National Centre for Diversity Awards for commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).
Principal Mark Fisher accepted the award on behalf of students and staff at RNC saying “I am very proud of this College and I know that our biggest asset is our student body. Thank you for the many student-led initiatives and for challenging us to keep moving forward.”
Rachel Beaumont, Residential Manager and EDI Lead at RNC, says “The RNC community is made up of a wide range of students and staff from all over the country, and some from across the world. Everyone is able to learn from each other and I think this definitely helps our students to become more open-minded when they leave us and return to their home areas.”
The news of the award proved popular on social media as messages of congratulations came flooding in; former student Charlotte Lamparter commented “I feel so proud to have gone to a College like this. Amazing!” Digital Media Officer Bik Lee adds “Social media is so inclusive and creates a platform for everybody to feel like they belong somewhere. At RNC my job is to showcase all the amazing things that happen at College. Here, diversity is not only understood and respected, but celebrated.”
EDI initiatives at RNC can affect a few students or the entire student body and can be anything from arranging transport to prayer centres to having the chance to interview a Holocaust survivor to linking up with local colleges to set up LGBT groups. RNC’s spirit is summed up perfectly by current student Danielle Brewster “So pleased I was able to be part of the EDI group last year and am still able to input in small ways this year. EDI at RNC is spectacular.” Each person’s contribution may seem small to them but at RNC all of these contributions make up the bigger picture and create the inclusive RNC community. Stephen Anderson simply says “So proud to be part of the RNC family”.
