I Can Represent My Country
I’m David and I’m 18 from Hampshire. I study Level 3 Sport and Recreation: Personal Training and I am a full member of the RNC Sports Academy.
I was registered blind at the age of five as a result of albinism; I also have nystagmus and photophobia.
I had always attended a mainstream school with a VI unit and I found out about RNC from one of my mates who was already studying here. I could see how much his independence had improved and that was something I wanted too. I wanted to be able to do simple things like travelling around on my own, having the confidence to meet new people and not needing to rely too much on my parents or teachers for support.
Life at RNC
I’ve always loved sport and liked the idea of studying sport at RNC. I’ve always been brought up as a Pompey fan (Portsmouth Football club) so when I was younger I was more interested in playing football until I had the chance to try Goalball and then I was hooked! Being a full member of the Sports Academy means I get 9 hours of additional sport on my timetable every week and I absolutely love it. The coaches are amazing; Aaron Ford is Coach for the GB women’s squad and helps me so much. As well as actual Goalball sessions I have strength and conditioning sessions in the gym with the Sports Academy coaches, Sport and Recreation teachers and Goalball UK coaches. The facilities at thePoint4 sports centre at the RNC are amazing – I can honestly say that this is more than I ever could have dreamed of.
Being away from home was hard to begin with but I stuck with it and grew in confidence both personally and professionally. The staff at RNC are so supportive, and know what I need to achieve my ambitions. I can’t believe how far I’ve come already, representing Great Britain at international tournaments, at home and abroad.
In the future I want to work as a personal trainer or strength and conditioning coach. I love helping others to achieve and am in a great position to do so.
