I Can achieve
My name is Gemma, I’m from Leek in Staffordshire and I work at RNC. Before I became an employee of this amazing organisation I was a student here back in 2000 when I studied A Levels in Psychology, Sociology, Critical Thinking and English, as well as GCSE Maths.
I was born with RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa), which is an inherited, degenerative eye condition that causes severe vision impairment; I was registered blind at the age 16.
I first heard about RNC through the DEA (Disability Employment Advisor) at my local Jobcentre in Leek, near Stoke-on-Trent. I had no idea that a specialist college like this existed, so I thought I would come and take a look around….. it was the best decision of my life! RNC helped me grow in confidence and I made some amazing friends, who I am still in contact with to this day.
After leaving RNC in 2003 I did some volunteer work until I had my son in 2005. By 2008, realising that my little boy was growing up, I wanted to get myself a career so I decided to come back to RNC to develop my IT skills and I gained a Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service which led to a TEP (Transitional Employment Post) at the College and in 2011 I finally became a fully-fledged member of RNC staff.
Life at RNC
Working at the main reception means that I am always at the heart of what’s going on at the College, there’s a variety of things to do and a real community feel about the place. As part of my job I train and supervise NVQ Business Administration students in the corporate office and reception – it’s lovely to watch the students grow in confidence and self-esteem while here at RNC.
I feel very privileged to be a part of the College, training and working here has enabled me to achieve a balance between my family life and a rewarding career and I hope to further my career within RNC in the future. Being both a student and member of staff has given me a unique insight from both sides of the College and I could not be prouder to be part of such an amazing place….hopefully for many years to come!
