I Can travel the world
Hi I am Hanif, I am 18 years old and from Stoke on Trent. I have been registered with RP (Retinitis Pigmentosis) for about 11 years. I am studying A Level Spanish, Psychology and English at The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC).
I had pretty decent sight in most of primary school up until year 6 when I lost my peripheral vision. When I went into high school I was given a learning support assistant who followed me around until I had done my long cane training. I felt quite restricted and that I was always being watched. When I was in year 7 there was school trip to France, the teachers asked me if I wanted to go but I turned it down. I didn’t feel confident enough to go.
Life at RNC
My family and teachers convinced me to apply but I didn’t think I was going to like RNC at first, because I am partially sighted I had expectations everyone else would be guide dog users and I didn’t think it would be the right the place for me. But now I’m so glad I came here. The teachers here are experienced with visual impairment and they make your life much easier.
Back home, people say that they have seen an increase in my confidence since I have been at RNC. I have definitely become more independent; I had never travelled anywhere on my own before I started College. But at RNC I have had one to one mobility lessons and they taught me everything I needed to know so I can travel independently now.
This year I have been on an RNC trip to Spain. This is the first time I remember travelling on a plane (I know I went abroad when I was younger but it was so long ago I can’t even remember it! I loved Spain, and it’s a place that I would like to go to again. The food was great, miles better than England! I tried some new things like eating squid and fishing for mussels. I think I can appreciate the country of Spain more now that I have been there and not just what I’ve read about it in books. The trip definitely made me feel much more confident and improved my language skills – especially as I am going to university to study Spanish!
Having the freedom to go to Spain made me realise how important it is to experience other cultures. In the future I’d love to visit the Arctic Circle. I have heard about the sunsets and I want to experience it for myself. When I leave RNC, I am going to university to study languages and would like to become a teacher in the future. I’ve come to RNC at 16, got my A Levels and just like anyone else I can travel the world.
