Tiri is standing on the red carpet at the Guide Dogs Annual Awards – she is smiling at the camera as she holds up her award for Young Persons Achievement.

Tiri is a current student, she began her studies at RNC in 2015.

RNC Student Chair, Tiri Hughes, has been awarded Guide Dogs’ Young Persons Achievement Award! 17 year old Tiri was awarded the honour at the glitzy annual Guide Dogs Awards in London on Wednesday 9 December 2015 as she was accompanied by her mother Laura Hughes.

Tiri, from Devon, was born partially sighted and has always lived with sight loss. After training since the age of 11, she is now a senior artistic gymnast and member of the GB Disability Gymnastics Team, she jokes “Gymnastics is very much a sport that isn’t designed for blind people!” But it’s Tiri’s love and passion for the sport which has seen her win countless medals at National, British and Welsh competitions. Tiri admits “When I’m on beam I can’t actually see it, I also can’t see the bars when I’m transitioning or the vault when I’m on top of it; I do everything by memory and counting.”

As a member of the RNC Sports Academy, Tiri’s Coach Aaron Ford says “Her attitude and willingness to learn is exceptional. We’re currently working on her range and conditioning routine for her Level 2 grading; she knows what she wants to achieve, and with the effort she puts in she’s an absolute pleasure to work with.”

Student Chair Tiri was elected into the role by her peers to represent the RNC student body, she explains “I enjoy making a difference and if I can help in other people’s lives then I want to do it. I want to ensure that everyone feels they have a voice and that their views are listened to. A big part of the role is being approachable and I like to think that people can talk to me.”

In her GCSEs Tiri achieved 10 A* and 1 B grade, she has a real thirst for knowledge and always wants to learn more. RNC Principal Mark Fisher says “With her sights set on University and a career in medicine, Tiri is keen to make the most of every opportunity to develop her skills. I am not surprised that she won the Guide Dogs Achievement Award, she is a fantastic role model and an inspiration to her peers.”
