Happy Unity Day!

On 3 October every year there is a public holiday in Germany, known as Unity Day, which remembers the anniversary of the merger between East and West Germany in 1990. At RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) our younger learners, aged 16-25, are not old enough to remember this significant event in world history but the aim of the day is to raise awareness about embracing differences and bringing people together.

Every year at RNC we offer trips abroad to Germany for all of our students, with places being prioritised for language learners. Earlier this year our students took a trip to Stuttgart, Germany to take in the sites, have a taste of German culture and visit our sister college Nikolauspflege.

Claire Lewin, Languages Teacher at RNC, says “Many students come to RNC without having studied a language before. It’s such a shame because they’re missing out on so much, learning a language is not just about the verbal part of it; it’s the chance to experience different foods, cultures and travelling abroad is invaluable to developing their social and communication skills.”
