Another successful Have a Go weekend!
During February half term, we enjoyed another entertaining Have a Go weekend as young people aged 13-17 from all across the country came to the RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) in Hereford accompanied by siblings, parents and support workers.
The activities at the weekend included music, golf, bowling, art, fitness classes, business studies sessions and the chance to explore the Independent Living Skills kitchen. Tom Bendall, Outreach and Events Officer at RNC, who organised the weekend said “These weekends are great for youngsters to be able to experience a taste of independence, to try new things and to make friends. Lots of youngsters stay in touch after these events and it’s a great way for them to build their confidence and their social skills.”
The Have a Go weekends are also helpful for parents, who are on a separate programme for the weekend. They are able to tour the campus, meet key members of staff as well as have taster sessions in lessons such as IT and Independent Living Skills. RNC’s Student Recruitment Manager Tim Broome says “Some young people may not have experienced time away from their parents before so it’s great for the youngsters to go off and have fun whilst parents and guardians have the opportunity to network with other parents and know that their young people are in safe hands with us.”
Young people often go away feeling more independent, having been involved in brand new activities and some of the feedback we received during this weekend included;
- “It was very fun and I wish that I could go here for my college.”
- “The college is supportive and homely.”
- “Great to see the College, it’s as good as I expected. Q&A sessions helpful.”
- “Excellent facility for young people to gain skills in independence.”
If you think that this sounds like fun, book onto the next Have a Go weekend which takes place 27-28 October 2018.
