International Paralympic Committee President Sir Philip Craven MBE, who addressed a television audience of millions at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympics, will be in Hereford on Friday 7 November to mark three very special occasions at The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC).

The College officially launches the UK’s first Sports Academy for people with visual impairments, offering a variety of sports to students, many of whom have never been involved in physical education at school. Sir Philip will be joined by Patron for the RNC Sports Academy Dave Clarke, former captain of England and Team GB Blind Football squads. Demonstrations of blind football, Goalball and VI golf will be given by RNC students, confirming the Academy’s ambition as a national centre for sporting progression.

Tony Larkin, Director at RNC and former England Blind Football coach, Jeff Davis of the FA and Sir Philip will announce the draw for the IBSA Blind Football European Championships 2015. With the tournament taking place at RNC in August next year, the draw is highly anticipated within the England camp – the team needs a top two finish in order to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

To finish the day, recent and current students will join Sir Philip for the annual Celebration of Achievement; a time when each student’s contribution to the College is noted, awards are given and certificates bestowed.

“I am really looking forward to my visit to RNC for the Celebration of Achievement in November this year,” enthused Sir Philip. “I can’t wait to meet the inspiring individuals at the College and learn about their future aspirations, which I hope that I can contribute to.”

The Celebration of Achievement gives former students the chance to meet up with friends; learners at RNC come from all over the country with many returning to their home areas once they leave Hereford.
