Creditable Finish for Team RNC at University Mathematics Quiz
On Wednesday, 20 November 2019, four A Level Mathematics students – Nicole Corley, Alice Hopkins, Meme Robertson and Kelsey Trevett – represented The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) at the annual A Level Mathematics Pop Quiz hosted by the University of South Wales (USW), Treforest Campus, Pontypridd.
The quiz consisted of two rounds of eight questions under time pressure, with approximately four minutes allocated per question.
Team RNC was up against 18 other teams and did very well, finishing middle of the field, which is excellent considering it was the students’ first time at such an event.
Albert Pitcher, Mathematics Teacher said:
‘We must give a huge thumbs up to USW who provided the questions in Grade 2 Braille and in bold print. They also amended three questions to make them more accessible for our students.’
Graham Jones, RNC’s Mathematics Support Volunteer, kindly scribed the team’s responses maintaining an unbiased stance.
It was a great visit to USW and the event was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to RNC’s Lukasz Kowalski, who transported everyone in the College minibus.
