Oscar – Work Experience placement at Premier Inn
We arrange a work experience week every year at RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) where our students gain a real life understanding of what a typical working day is like in an industry where they could potentially seek employment in the future. Today we look at Oscar Rawling, 19 from London, who had his placement at the national hotel chain Premier Inn.
Oscar is studying Business and Administration at RNC and, during his placement at the Hereford Premier Inn, he was able to experience first-hand the frantic nature of mornings in the hotel industry! He observed how they perform ECIs (early check ins), printing off receipts and ensuring databases are filled in correctly and how they match up to the printed paperwork etc. Oscar says “The days are really busy, especially in the mornings so it’s really full on and there’s a lot to take in. I didn’t realise how much goes on behind the scenes before the guests even arrive.”
In a recent TES article entitled “Students want work experience back in the curriculum” Chief executive of the Career Colleges Trust, Ruth Gilbert, said “Our research shows that young people want the opportunity to develop employability skills and recognise the importance of doing this.”
During his placement Oscar impressed the staff with his enthusiasm and we are currently in discussions with Premier Inn for him to undertake a weekly work placement at the hotel in order to build his skills even further. Systems across the Premier Inn hotel chain are standard across the board; they use the same systems for check ins, maintenance work and restaurant bookings etc. so employees can seamlessly transfer from hotel to hotel across the country. This could be very useful for Oscar when he returns to his home area in London after completing his studies at RNC.
