RNC A Level students excel with 100% pass rate!
At RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) we are thrilled to announce that our A Level students have achieved a 100% pass rate!
19 year old Tiri Hughes from Ivybridge, Devon, attained 2 A* grades in A Level Maths and Chemistry. She also achieved 2 AS Levels in Biology and Psychology, for which she attained A Grades (A is the highest grade available at AS Level).
Tiri, who is Chair of the RNC student representative group, said “The support at RNC is so good that it’s just integrated into the normal teaching style. This is in contrast to mainstream school where I had a different TA (teaching assistant) with me all the time and they ended up trying to teach me subjects that they didn’t know. At RNC, because of the small class sizes, you get a teacher that firstly knows what they’re teaching and secondly how to teach someone with VI (visual impairment).”
RNC Maths Teacher Albert Pitcher was amazed at Tiri’s Maths results, “To get 100% in a Maths paper is extraordinary; a fantastic achievement.” Tiri, who is taking 4 A Levels over the course of three years, will return to RNC in September to complete her A Levels in Biology and Psychology, as well as begin her UCAS applications to study medicine at university. She says “I had to come to RNC for three years to be able to fit in the mobility, braille and living skills that I needed to be independent. It has also given me more time to apply for a place to study medicine, the process is different to most degrees and includes a variety of entrance exams, and interviews. I am grateful for the transitions support I have received at RNC to help prepare me for this. I know that studying medicine as someone with VI will be a challenge but it’s what I’m passionate about.”
In summary of today’s results Libby Hudson, RNC’s Teacher in Charge of Academic Studies, says “We are very pleased with the results which have come out from the new A Level format; the vast majority of our students have done as well, or even better than expected. There will be one or two individual students who will be disappointed in the grades that they got in one or two subjects but overall, as a College we are really, really pleased with the results.”
RNC Principal Mark Fisher goes on to say “For any college to be able to stand up and say that their A Level pass rate is 100% is an achievement, but for a specialist college like us it is almost unheard of. I would like to congratulate each and every one of our students who are a shining example that hard work pays off. I would also like to say thank you to our dedicated team of teaching staff; their expertise in teaching, their unrivalled experience in working with students who have visual impairment and their ability to see the potential in our students is something that I am incredibly proud of.”
