RNC Plant sale helps students grow their confidence

Laura T, Fatima and Nathan are sitting behind the desk, which has a cash box some price lists and a box of plants on it. Avram is standing just behind them holding a geranium plant. They are situated on some grass under a gazebo and in the background there are many other plants and hedges.

Every year, at RNC (Royal National College for the Blind), we open the doors to our beautiful garden for a series of plant sales. This year’s first plant sale was held on Thursday 12 May and the weather was glorious, attracting customers from all across the county of Herefordshire!

The plant sale was hosted by RNC’s NVQ Business Administration students, who took it in turns to man the customer services desk. Student governor Laura Eggins, 19 from Devon, said “It’s been so busy and definitely an interesting experience – especially trying to identify the plants! But it’s also given us such a good experience to practice our customer service skills.”

Laura Tyler, 20 from Horsham is West Sussex, is a keen gardener who takes part in horticulture for her weekly learning and leisure sessions “I’ve always found nature and conservation really interesting and I know a fair amount about it so the plant sale gives me the chance to share my knowledge whilst demonstrating my customer service skills.”

At RNC, work-based learning is at the heart of our curriculum and the business administration office is located in its own working based in the Gardner Hall reception of the College. Fatima Al-Muharrami, 21 from Cardiff, says “I really like talking to people and helping them. This sort of thing is all about good communication and gives me experience in serving members of the public.”

Paul Smith, RNC’s Learning Support Assistant, manages the RNC Garden and said that the day was a real success “It was fantastic seeing the students working together as a team, delivering a great customer experience. Plants are not something that all of the students are familiar with but it’s all about them experiencing new environments and giving them the ability to put into practice the skills that they are learning in the classroom.”
