RNC student selected for GB Women’s Goalball European Championships!

Kali is in the sports hall, in front of the goal during a Goalball practice. She is in a defensive position on the floor, she has her hands on the floor and her legs in a crouching position ready to block the ball.

This Sunday, 16 year old Kali Holder flies to Portugal for her first major tournament as part of the GB Women’s Goalball Team. Kali, who joined RNC (Royal National College for the Blind) as a student earlier this month, cannot hide her delight as she simply screams “I’m so excited!”

Kali is a member of the RNC Sports Academy, where she enjoys between four and five hours of Goalball every week. “Before I came to RNC I played Goalball for Winchester and had to travel for over two hours every weekend for practices. I can’t believe how amazing the facilities are at RNC – the sports hall is huge and you could fit three goalball courts in there!”

Goalball is the only sport created specifically for people with visual impairment and Kali enjoys the social aspect of it “I like working as part of a team and how all the small things each of us does contribute to the game – because we have to wear eyeshades to play we need to constantly communicate with each other so we have awareness of where everyone is on the court.”

At the RNC Sports Academy Kali says “There is a good standard of Goalball at RNC, the Sports Academy sessions are mixed so there are opportunities to play against men and women as the styles of play tend to be different. I prefer playing in centre or left wing but practice right wing too so I can be more versatile; playing with different levels of players challenges me and allows me to adapt my play.”

Kali has only been playing Goalball for three years, she quickly progressed through the GB youth squad and is lucky enough to train at RNC alongside Sports Coach Aaron Ford who also happens to be the GB Women’s Goalball Coach! In Portugal Kali will be competing alongside Goalball veteran and former RNC student Laura Perry, as well as other RNC Sports Academy Graduates Dan Roper and Caleb Nanevie who are representing GB Men’s Goalball. We, at RNC, wish both GB teams the very best of luck!
