Student Ambassadors: Here to Help!

Group of blind and partially sighted pupils walking down the hub ramp at the Royal National College for the Blind

The first few weeks at The Royal National College for the Blind can be a little daunting; moving from home, learning new routes and making new friends. Thankfully most students settle really quickly and RNC soon becomes their new home.

To help with the settling in process we have eight student ambassadors. Their role is to act as a link between the college and the students, being able to act upon their own experiences and offer support and advice where needed.

Student ambassador and second year student Matty is studying a level 3 Diploma in Business having completed the ASPIRE programme in his first year.

‘I was really happy to be chosen to be a student ambassador. I really enjoy it here and want to make sure other people do to. When I first started my older brother was a student here so I always had someone I could ask questions to. I think it’s important to be able to ask a silly question when you are not sure or if you have forgotten something simple.’

Being a student ambassador comes with responsibilities but also opportunities. They also help facilitate campus tours and deliver presentations at open days, allowing ambassadors to build on their personal and professional skills.

Shona is another second year student chosen to be a student ambassador. Having completed a number of GCSE’s last year, Shona has progressed to an A Level programme and is looking at university after college.

‘I am a social person that likes to help others, so I am thinking about university courses in Health and Social Care. Being an ambassador will enhance my university application; it shows that I am confident and can communicate as well as that I want to help other people’.

‘My advice to students is, ask if you are unsure’.
