Winter Wonderland Puts Skills into Practice

Students on the Aspire course at RNC Hereford

Students from our Aspire course today swapped their classroom for stalls as their hand crafted products went on sale in the Winter Wonderland Christmas fayre.

For the past few weeks the students have been creating a selection of products from wooden candle holders to hot chocolate stocking fillers as part of their work based learning activities. The students then sold these products at their annual Winter Wonderland sale, giving them an opportunity to showcase their work and practice their selling skills.

Paul Socket, teacher for the Aspire course has been working with the student to develop the products. ‘This programme has enabled the students to practice so many life skills; customer service, money and finance, communication and team work skills, they are all transferable to so many areas of life.’

The Aspire course is focused on vocational training, equipping students with skills and experience that they can embed into regular work placements.

Learning skills for life

Young student, Lydia 17, has been involved with the products from the design and creation stage through to the sales. ‘The experience we gained from this sale is really important. I enjoyed talking to the customers and seeing what people thought of the products.’
