The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of disability. This website has been designed with the needs of people with visual impairments and other disabilities in mind, which includes those who use accessibility software to access the internet.
The RNC website has a number of inbuilt accessibility options which can allow you to alter the background colour and increase or decrease the font size as you require. You also have the option to ‘Skip to main content’ and view a ‘Text only’ version of the website. All of these options can be accessed from the top left of every page on the website.
The creation of this website has been as a result of research and consultations with people with differing visual impairments who use a range of accessibility software. Our audience access the internet using a variety of devices from mobiles and tablets to laptops and desktops; the website is responsive to adapt to these differing screen sizes.
Above all else, we wanted to create a fully accessible website which was actually usable for our largely visually impaired audience. As the UK’s leading Further Education College for those aged 16 plus with visual impairments, we have a keen onsite audience who regularly undergo testing of the website from an accessibility and practical user side.
To build this website we have used WordPress, a Content Management System which has templates that define the layout and structure of each page. We have tested that each template is conformant with WCAG 2.0 Level AA guidelines. We have, in some cases, also met Level AAA guidelines. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about the website please email firstname.lastname@example.org
