Students learn the art of bread making
Students were given a great opportunity to hone their culinary skills and learn the art of bread making thanks to the College caterers, Baxter Storey.
There were a range of baking abilities among the students taking part but Mark from Baxter Storey, who led the class, made sure everyone had a basic understanding of the baking techniques including the importance of fermentation and proving and how to knead the dough.
In the photograph below, Dom has his prepared dough in a covered bowl ready to prove.
Students fully embraced this opportunity to learn a new skill, which was a great tactile activity and definitely one for the senses - the aroma from the freshly baked bread was out of this world.
This photo shows all the bread stacked up in the oven baking:
The group produced some really impressive results. The loaves looked amazing and the best part was tasting them at the end.
Here are Dom, Humna and Mildred showing off their bakes:
Mark cuts Rachel a slice of her bread and gets ready to do a taste test:
Huge thanks to Mark, Jude and the team at Baxter Storey for giving up their time to put on this bread making masterclass, and thanks to volunteers Elvira and Pippa for supporting the activity.
