RNC achieves 'Good' rating from Ofsted across its residential provision
The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) is celebrating its recent 'Good' rating from Ofsted across all aspects of its residential provision. The announcement follows a thorough three-day inspection in March, where inspectors assessed the standard of residential care provided to students who live on campus during term time.
Inspectors evaluated a wide range of services, including student support, safeguarding, accommodation, activities, and catering, all of which contribute to the positive experience and progress of students.
The Ofsted report highlights the significant benefits students receive from living on campus. According to the report:
'Students flourish and thrive in the residential accommodation. They value their growing independence and the opportunities it gives them'
'Students make progress in multiple areas of their lives. Most notably, this progress is associated with their independence.'
'Students leave the College with various new skills and with increased independence and confidence.'
'Parents feel that staff empower their children to achieve and support them well. They see their children develop their independence and confidence during their time at the College.'
The report also noted that:
'The College provides a community for students who have previously been more likely to experience isolation'
and that
'Students like their accommodation and feel it is well tailored to their needs. They say that staff support them well and are always available if they need anything.'
The report also positively highlighted leadership and management stating:
'Leaders have a clear vision for the residential provision. They maintain high expectations about student achievements, with a focus on independence and life skills to build resilience and confidence.'
Furthermore, it acknowledged the dedication of the staff, noting:
'Staff are dedicated and enthusiastic about their role to support students. They receive regular training to support their practice, which includes sessions that are tailored to meet students' individual needs or emerging themes.'
RNC's leadership team were very happy with the feedback and tone of the report. Mark Fisher, RNC's Vice Principal (Quality, Community and Inclusion), commented:
'I'm really pleased with how the report captures the way our students value the development of their independence. Inspectors could see that RNC is a strong community with students enjoying positive relationships with staff across all support areas. Student support is a vital element of students’ experiences at RNC. Student Support Services provides an environment where students are challenged beyond their comfort zone, are able to take informed risks and supported to learn from experiences. It was excellent that the Ofsted inspectors were able to contextualise the way we work and view our approach so positively.'
