Megan competes at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open
RNC student Megan Smithson-Booth took a huge step in her martial arts journey in July, when she competed in her first ever Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competition – the BJJ British Open held at Warwick University.

Despite not taking home a medal, Meg put on an impressive performance, showing incredible courage, determination, and spirit – especially as a visually impaired (V.I.) athlete at such a high-level event.
Meg trains with The Combat Academy and had the full support of her teammates and coaches on the day. She even had the opportunity to meet and be interviewed by Braulio Estima, one of the most respected names in the sport. For those unfamiliar, Braulio Estima is a multiple world champion, ADCC champion, and a 5th-degree black belt in BJJ. He is globally recognised for both his technical skill and his dedication to growing the sport.
Braulio is also the head coach of Dave Coles, who runs The Combat Academy Hereford, where Meg trains regularly. A spokesperson for the Academy said:
'We are incredibly proud of Meg’s bravery, effort, and sportsmanship in stepping onto the mats at such a high-profile event. Competing at the British Open is a massive achievement in itself – especially for someone new to the sport and overcoming additional challenges as a V.I. athlete.'
