GB Women's Goalball squad still on track for Paralympics 2024
Aaron Ford, RNC's Head of Sport and Head Coach of the GB Women's Goalball squad, plus two RNC Sports Academy students, Antonia Bunyan and Amelia Robertson attended the European A Goalball Championships in Samsun, Turkey between 1 and 13 November. They were selected as part of the Goalball UK Senior Great Britain squad to play at the highest level of international competition within Europe.
The team finished a respectable sixth position within the competition and just missed out on qualifying for the World Championships (top five) but do remain in the European A league and are on track to maximise two further Paralympic qualification opportunities to be held in 2023.
Throughout the competition (which was live-streamed) RNC students played an active role in the competing team. Antonia Bunyan played pretty much every minute of every game, finishing as Great Britain's top goal scorer. Amelia Robertson didn't concede a goal throughout the competition and scored two valuable goals in a crucial play-off against Germany.
Team GB's most notable performance was recording a 3-2 victory over Turkey (current Paralympic Gold medallists). During this game Antonia Bunyan scored two crucial penalties to secure the victory.
Both student athletes represented Team GB and RNC excellently. There was a lot of media coverage and support for the team was excellent and demonstrated how effective RNC has been to support the development of athletes progressing to elite level.
The squad of six female athletes included four current or ex RNC Sports Academy students (Antonia Bunyan, Amelia Robertson, Kali Holder and Lois Turner).
Congratulations to Aaron and the team.
