A big cheer for 'Your Herefordshire'
As we near the end of term, the year-end also marks the conclusion of RNC's charity partnership with Your Herefordshire (YH) - a local online news platform.
In January 2020, we were delighted when Your Herefordshire chose The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) as their very first charity partner.
It should have seen the YH team covering lots of RNC news and events by using their platform to showcase how being blind or visually impaired is not a barrier to independence, education or employment, thanks to RNC's incredible staff and volunteers, but... we all know what happened next!
Despite the circumstances, the YH team still gave their all and made sure they shared any positive news about the College, helping to raise the profile of RNC in the local community and showcasing some of our extraordinarily talented students. After what had been a very difficult year for everyone, we were delighted when the team offered to extend the partnership through the pandemic for a second year.
Your Herefordshire has been a hugely positive link between the College and the people of Herefordshire. Every time a story is shared, there is a stream of lovely comments from the general public. Not only that, local businesses have engaged with the College on many levels - who can forget the time Westons Cider came to the rescue by arranging for one of their lorry drivers to pick up a donated tandem bicycle from the North East!
Matt Healey compèred a couple of thoroughly entertaining virtual quizzes to fundraise for the College and the team has supported many sporting events which has also raised the profile of disability sport.
Stefan Davis, one of the Your Herefordshire directors, said:
'Working with the Royal National College for the Blind has been absolutely fantastic. We've met some brilliant students, from the football team to those who helped out with the charity car wash in the summer. At Your Herefordshire we love to shout about local success stories and the College is certainly one. We hope that our coverage has helped to show more people just what RNC does and how important it is to the city of Hereford and the wider area.'
RNC has been honoured to be Your Herefordshire's inaugural charity partner and we're sure whichever charity the baton is passed to, the YH team will do their utmost to support them.
Although our partnership with Your Herefordshire comes to a natural end, RNC's story is far from over... next year the College celebrates its 150th Anniversary and is planning a whole year of events. Many of these will be open to the general public so do come along and discover what this very special College, situated in the heart of Hereford, has to offer.
