Students have a 'smashing' time at the Beefy Boys
It was excitement all round as a group of RNC's staff and students were invited to take part in a one-off experience of making their own burgers at the award-winning burger joint, the Beefy Boys, this week (Wednesday 4 May 2022).
Welcomed by Murf, one of the founders of the business, he gave students a really informative talk on how it all began for the Beefy Boys. He talked about the quality of the local ingredients used and, particularly useful for RNC students, he shared the restaurant's new Braille and large print menus and went on to describe the tastes, textures and some of the noises and sensations that students might experience when it came to building and using the grill to make their own smash patties.
The photograph below shows student, Mo, reading the Braille menu.
After hands were washed, students were provided with a tray of ingredients and began adding their favourite combination of condiments, cheeses, salad and pickles to the heel of their individual brioche buns.
This image shows Ollie, Mo, Reuben and Max getting the burger assembly underway.
One by one they went up to the grill and with expert and safe guidance from Murf, all managed to smash, season, flip and steam their patties.
The picture below shows Daria and Murf giving her burger a final steam.
There were some glorious combinations and the best bit was getting messy eating them. The photo below shows student, Max, tucking in.
On behalf of RNC, student, Max Campion, took to his feet and said:
'I would like to say on behalf of my College, thank you so much for a brilliant event. I cannot thank you all enough for today this has been a brilliant experience, learning how to build your own burger, having a trial using the grill and I feel as if I've learned some really good life skills and I just want to say thanks to the Beefy Boys for having us today.'
The excitement didn't stop there as Murf said:
'Every quarter staff at both our Hereford and Shrewsbury restaurants donate 10% of their service charge to a deserving charity. We decided to donate to RNC this quarter - January through to March - and we've raised for you guys £6,636.74.'
He unfurled a giant cheque and there were audible gasps in the room which was followed by spontaneous applause.
RNC is a charity and donations like this enable the College to buy necessary new equipment, update out-of-date kit, refurbish areas of the campus and purchase the latest resources for visual impairment. Donations also enable students to have enriching extra-curricular experiences.
Melanie Denning, RNC's Fundraising Manager, said:
'The College is delighted to receive this very generous donation and we thank the staff of the Beefy Boys for choosing us as their charity for this quarter and for hosting our students today. Most importantly we are thrilled that an independent Hereford restaurant has taken the lead over many national chains in working towards making themselves inclusive and accessible for all.'
