Orientation and mobility training

During your Pre-Entry Assessment we will work with you to establish which specific areas in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) you would like to develop or improve; this will form the basis of your initial programme and ensure we are working towards your priorities from day one.

We work with you to build your confidence and skills in independent and safe travel. You will have the opportunity to attend regular one-to-one mobility sessions where you can increase your skills whilst learning how to access the RNC campus and the local area.

The content and length of the programme will be agreed on an individual basis and could include the following areas:

• RNC campus
• local amenities
• city centre
• rail and bus stations 

The programme will then focus on developing strategies and plans that will provide you with skills that you can use throughout your life beyond RNC.

The RNC campus is fully accessible to guide dog owners. There is a guide dog washing room, separate laundry facilities for your dog’s bedding and towels, and concrete and grass spending pens. We have areas that are suitable for free running guide dogs and volunteers who are able to support you with this. 

RNC has its own trained guide dog boarder who is usually able to care for your dog for short periods of time if you need to board your dog whilst you are at RNC.

Guide dog users are taught routes and supported by RNC Orientation and Mobility Team members and Guide Dogs’ mobility instructors when required.
